Tis the Season

It is that time of year again. Christmas music is playing on the radio, all the Christmas classics are on TV, candles smell of cinnamon and cedar and it's officially time for hot chocolate. You're snuggled up by the fire enjoying all these festive traditions until it hits you...
In just a few weeks your house is going to be swarming with family and friends which means not only do you have to clean but also decorate, you've got to cook for not one but two days in a row and you've got so many gifts to buy you've lost tract. Panic mode sets in as you picture yourself doing last minute shopping in overcrowded department stores and possibly having to fight off other customers for a particular item. It makes you consider skipping Christmas doesn't it?

Picture
Just the other day I watched Christmas with the Kranks. It's a funny and heartwarming story about a couple who do decide to completely skip Christmas and go on a cruise instead. Much to the dismay of their friends and neighbors they figure by completely avoiding Christmas they can save their money and their sanity.

Picture
We've all felt like the Kranks, but this year when you need relaxation from the Holiday mayhem don't take it out on a fellow shopper or book a cruise. Instead, get an appointment at Body Works Day Spa and Salon. Here we offer a variety of services that will allow you to decompress and refocus on what this time of year is really all about. The decorations on the house are not nearly as important as the people filling it. So, get back to enjoying this season and look your best doing it with the help of Body Works. Tell them Santa sent you.

Wow, what a day!
Myself along with 4 others spent the day as our grungier corkier alter-ego selves on Oct. 6th as "Gasoline girls" for a new event in downtown Lynchburg, Garage Fest.

As you can see above, not my usual look haha!
Our costumes included:
Corseted tops- Boudoir Boutique
Accessories- Anastasia's
Hair and Makeup- Emily Garbee of Body Works Day Spa and Salon

What is a Garage Fest you might ask? It was a celebration of everything "garage." From the interesting hats on our heads to the bunches of vendors, artists, antique cars and motorcycles displayed in two levels of a parking garage in downtown Lynchburg.
Picture
What are Gasoline girls? Picture the 1920s cigarette girls, but with a garage twist. All five of us worked our looks and went around advertising for the event. We also worked a photo booth that was set up with an antique car and corky over-the-top props people could use in the photos.

Get Your Pink On

10/19/2012

October is Breast Cancer awareness month and all of us know, or know of someone, who has suffered a form of cancer.

Here at Body Works we have a creative and simply way to show support, pink hair extensions!

It is only $10 and ALL proceeds go to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
It takes less than 5 minutes and it is attached with a keratin bond to a small section of your hair.
Since the extension is also natural hair you can do everything you normally would (blow-dry, curl, flat-iron)  and it will just grow out, so no worries there.

It's that simple.

So come get your pink on at Body Works Day Spa and Salon and help show support with your hair!

Color Crash Course

9/4/2012

In order to keep up with the latest techniques and trends a salon must continuously be offering their stylists classes to further their education.

Last week I got to take my first class at Body Works Day Spa and Salon with a representative from Alfaparf. The class started with the representative using a new color formula on our owner. While waiting for her color to set, the representative described the latest products Alfaparf is offering on their product line and also explained hair color theory.

There is a difference between mixing the hair color and creating the hair color. As assistant, I am given a formula and I mix it for the stylist to use on the client. In order to mix the formula I only need to know the ratio between color and developer.
However, if I was told to look at a clients hair color and create a formula I would have no idea what to do; what color to pick or how much to use. That is where the hair color theory comes in.  While mixing, I've been wondering how do the hair stylists know what colors  and how much I'm supposed to be mixing?

I know this is what cosmetology school is for, but if I have an educated representative right here in the salon why not start learning... it was a crash course.
I learned there are three primary colors when dying hair: blue, red, and yellow... like painting.
There are three secondary colors as well: green, violet, and orange.
These six colors are then classified into warm and cool colors which can be seen on the different ends of the color wheel. The color wheel is key to understanding how to make a color formula.
I still do not know how to create a color quite yet, but I have a better understanding of the color scale.

It was a packed morning of hair and color education and I can not wait for the next one.

Good Read

I always try to keep up with the latest magazine issues. I'm the person on line in the grocery/ drug store who no one likes because I'm trying to glance through each magazine before reaching the check out and never realize to move up.
You know what I'm talking about...

Well, the September Allure is out and I was grabbed by the hilarious and gorgeous Sofia Vergara from the hit show Modern Family on the cover.
Not only does it include the feature article about Sofia Vergara, but also an interesting article about the celebrity make-up artist Scott Barnes. All I'm going to say is, he was JLOs makeup artist for years...  it is a quick, but good read.
Check it out!  (Not while waiting on line because you'll get unpleasant looks.)

Morning Makeup

8/23/2012

Getting ready... have a hot cup of coffee and am putting on my makeup.
Not sure the look I'm going for today...
but I'm not in a rush this morning so I'm just playing with techniques and colors.

Since I'm writing about how makeup is a part of my morning it reminded me of what someone recently told me; people who wear makeup on a regular basis don't feel comfortable in their natural skin and that it's false advertisement of what you really look like.  This is not the first time I've heard this and my response is... not true.

I can and do walk out of the house without makeup on. However,  I prefer to wear it to enhance my features and because it makes me feel ready and confident to start each day.  There is a balance between too much and not enough but that's for you to test out and see what works for your style.
So, if you're someone who very rarely wears makeup give it a try you might be surprised at how natural you can make it look and if nothing else at least wear lip gloss.  If you're someone who always wears makeup its ok to let your face have a "natural" day.

Helpful tip: If you have a lot of makeup and don't know how to store and organize it all, use a tackle box... it's a lot cheaper than buying a professional case!
